Tips for this list
- Use a clear plastic crate or mark the box on every side. It should be the one box nobody has to read a label to find.
- Load it last so it comes off first, or take it in the car with you.
- Pack it the night before the move, from the things you use that evening and the next morning. That is exactly the set you will want again.
- Counts for bedding, towels and clothes come from the people and nights you enter and are estimates; a household that shares or does not share beds should adjust.
Questions
What should be in a first-night box when moving?
What you need to sleep, wash, eat breakfast and open the other boxes: bedding, towels, toilet paper, a kettle and mugs, a change of clothes, chargers, a box cutter and a screwdriver. The checklist counts them for your household.
How many boxes is that?
For one or two people and one night, one large box or crate plus a bag of bedding usually does. More people or more nights spreads it over two or three; the checklist does not fix a number because bedding takes most of the space.
What changes if the rest of our things arrive days later?
Raise the number of nights. Clothes and breakfasts are counted from it, work or school clothes appear from two nights and a laundry bag from three. Choosing air beds swaps the bed fittings for mats and a pump.
